Nepal Government Promises for a Probe on Murder Case: Protests Continue (November 20, 2008) - [read more]
By Divas
Kathmandu observed a transport strike to protest the murder of two youths by the suspected Maoist cadres. Pushkar & Nirmal, both professional sportsmen, were abducted by the Maoist cadres a month ago. However, the Maoists deny the accusation.
If you’re visiting Kathmandu for the first time, it must have been an interesting experience for you. All public transport, except the private vehicles, were grounded till afternoon. Locals & tourists alike were seen walking to their destination, or taking a Rickshaw ride.Transport operations were resumed in the evening.
The youth wings of the Maoists & the opposing parties clashed at some places especially around campuses in the day. Some shops at the tourist center of Kathmandu’s Thamel were also vandalized. Although foreigners are generally respected in Nepal, stay away from any local scuffle that may arise in future.
A deal was reached between the government & opposing youths to compensate the families of the murder victims, & form a high level commission to probe into the case.
The Maoist youth wing chief talking to the BBC in the evening lamented that it was unfortunate to blame every incidence of violence on the Maoists, even when they were following, in his own words, “Buddha & Gandhi’s principles” after the country was declared a republic early this year.
Although life came back to normalcy the same evening, students have continued the protests in Kathmandu campuses asking for a ban on Maoist youth wing, the YCL.
